Program Description

This is an Undergraduate course for Undergraduate students only
TRAVEL WILL OCCUR FROM MARCH 9-17, 2018
The ability to collaborate with individuals of other healthcare professions is increasingly important in a variety of disciplines such as Social Work, Art Therapy, Nutrition and Dietetics, Nursing Athletic Training/Exercise Sports Science, Psychology, Music Therapy, Science (Pre-PA), and Nursing. A global perspective is also vital to these professions. This course aims to provide students with knowledge and hands-on experience with inter-professional collaboration in a global context culminating in an 8-day trip to the Republic of Ireland.
This is a spring break program in the rural Irish countryside. Students will have the opportunity to have hands-on learning related to the delivery of healthcare in the Republic of Ireland. An emphasis will be placed on practicing and studying inter-professional teamwork and communication. Pre-and post trip experiences and exercises will facilitate learning of global healthcare issues and the implementation of collaboration between healthcare providers.
Highlights:

  • Learn from community healthcare professionals in Ireland
  • Shadow healthcare providers
  • Experience the Irish culture-interacting with the Irish people and experiencing cultural activities
  • Develop knowledge and skills of inter-professional collaboration

This program provides a practical 'hands-on' experience, teaching skills that can be applied in a wide range of future setting/careers. The goals of the program are:
  • to understand the achievements, failures and goals of the local community for Birr town
  • to work with the local minority and youth groups and learn about health issues and challenges they have
  • to gain hands on experience and learning through the exchange of time, skills and knowledge
  • to understand the important symbiotic relationship between place and people in the construct of community (within an Irish context)
  • to build strong relationships with the local community, through interactions and the provision of community based services
  • to develop skills in interpersonal relations, problem solving, critical thinking, and cognitive development
  • to attain a unique cultural experience in Ireland, which focuses on the immense heritage of the Midland Region - a frequently overlooked hidden gem within the island
