Program Description

This program is approved for ARCHITECTURE majors ONLY.

The Institute offers a specialized program for qualified students of architecture. The Architecture studio is located in the Palazzo Bargagli. The architecture studio is conveniently located within walking distance of Palazzo Rucellai.

The Architecture program accepts students who have completed two years of architecture study. Participants are required to enroll in the following curriculum:

FALL SEMESTER
• ARCH410:– Architecture Design Studio VII (5 cr) or IARCH 410 A – Interior Architecture Design Studio VII (5 cr)
• Italian Language (4 credits)
• 2 Electives (3 credits each)

SPRING SEMESTER
• ARCH320:– Architecture Design Studio VI (5 cr) or IARCH 320 A – Interior Architecture Design Studio VI (5 cr)
• Italian Language (4 credits)
• 2 Electives (3 credits each)

All students are provided with individual drafting tables and workspace for the duration of the program. The studio and context courses are taught by practicing architects and academics, and are designed to integrate classroom study with visits to churches, museums and monuments, and field trips to a variety of relevant destinations. The courses allow students to sketch on site and explore ideas for a team project that is the core of the advanced design studio course.

Participants take courses while immersed in the artistic and architectural riches of a unique urban complex and experiencing the city-as-campus. The Institute is comprised of two facilities.

Two floors of this famous Renaissance residence have been refurbished for use as an educational center with classrooms, computer labs, library, student lounge, administrative offices, and a large student services center. The entire facility has wireless internet access.

The classrooms are large, ornately decorated rooms with their original 18th century frescoes and furnishings. The Library holds a growing collection of books and periodicals selected to support the needs of the academic program.
