In 2008 a US Catholic Bishops statement highlighted the need for attention to Africa. It stated, “We raise our voices and echo the pleas made by the Holy See at the UN Millennium Summit that Africa be given special attention, and that efforts be made which are really capable of meeting its needs." In response, ASEC colleges sought ways to broaden student understanding of the world, and of Africa, and to address needs as they were able to. Service learning is a commonly accepted way to introduce undergraduate students to roles of service and to other cultures. The Service Learning Program of ASEC was initiated in 2008. This program provides opportunity for students from ASEC colleges and universities to spend time tutoring students. Prior to each trip, preparation at the participating ASEC campuses is through a credit-bearing course, which introduces students to the culture, economics, history, and language of where they are going. It also includes some time for students from each campus to get acquainted with one another.
