The first is to show students an economical method of museum study in a European city, and the second is the digesting of the influences into a portfolio of works that are then juried into an off-campus exhibit. The class meets for two one and a half hour sessions prior to the travel period. The first meeting, in late January, covers essential travel information such as language, customs, transatlantic flights, ground transport, obtaining passport, currency, average weather forecasting/packing concerns, electrical adapters, the general layout of the city, the types of things needed during travel and recommendations of what not to try to bring. All of this information is also provided in a print out, a copy of which is attached. In the second meeting the students are advised to begin researching a possible “area of focus”, that will serve to fine-tune the work done both in Europe and upon returning. The area of focus can shift and even change completely, given the unfolding nature of the experience. The area of focus is directly related in some way to the destination cities. Each day during travel students follow the instructor through pre-selected venues with lectures and informal discussion, for four to six hours. Students use the remainder of the day individually or in small groups exploring areas of focus, drawing and taking photos. Upon return, there are four classes during which students have critiques, review sketchbooks jury works for the exhibit and finally plan and hang the exhibit. ** NOTE the DOCUMENTS attached to this webpage:
